International Security Officers Day – 24 July, 2025

A Tribute to the Silent Sentinels of Society

July 24th marks International Security Officers Day, a date thoughtfully chosen to reflect the 24/7 nature of the role these dedicated professionals play across the world. It is a day to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contribution of private security guards, who stand watch every hour of every day to ensure safety and order.

The history of private security dates back to 1850, when Allen Pinkerton founded the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in Chicago. Even earlier, ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and Romans routinely employed private guards for protection.

In Bangladesh, the private security industry began its journey around 1988, evolving from the colonial-era model of “Darwans” and “Chowkidars” to a more professional, uniformed force. This transformation was made possible by a few visionary and enterprising retired military officers who identified the need for structured private security services. Today, the industry has grown into a formidable workforce of nearly one million personnel and over 500 registered companies.

Despite this significant growth, security often remains a low priority in public and private domains—until an incident underscores its critical value. The reality is that the presence of a well-trained security guard is often the first and most important line of defense. Yet, the guard at the post frequently remains unrecognized, their dedication taken for granted.

International Security Officers Day aims to change that narrative—globally and in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Professional Security Service Providers Association (BPSSPA) has proudly supported this observance over the years as a platform to honor and uplift our front-line security personnel.

This year, BPSSPA encourages all member companies to mark the occasion internally. Each member is requested to identify and honor their most dedicated and efficient guards with the BPSSPA Certificate of Excellence and the Honor Pin—a symbol of appreciation for their tireless commitment.

Let us all take a moment on July 24th to stand in solidarity with the men and women who guard us every day. Recognizing their service is not just a formality—it is a responsibility.
